Safe and Sound Protocol

What is the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP)? The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a therapeutic listening program developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, a scientist known for his research on the connection between the nervous system and our sense of safety and connection. SSP uses specially filtered music to help train the muscles in your middle ears to focus on sounds that signal safety. This process helps to improve your nervous system’s ability to respond to stress and calmness in a balanced way.

How does the Safe and Sound Protocol work? The SSP works by stimulating the vagus nerve and neural networks that are involved in listening. The music used in the protocol is specifically designed to engage and activate these networks, helping your nervous system become more flexible and responsive. Dr. Porges discovered that certain sound frequencies, especially those found in the way a mother speaks to her infant (known as prosodic speech), can have a calming effect on the nervous system. By listening to the filtered music in the SSP, you train your system to better regulate itself when faced with stress or challenges.

What does the 5 hours of music involve? The 5 hours of music in the SSP are carefully curated and broken into different sessions that you listen to over a period of time. These sessions are designed to help your nervous system gradually tune into the frequencies that promote a sense of safety. Over the course of the listening program, you train your ears and your nervous system to better process sounds that are linked with calmness and safety, which helps to reduce stress responses and improve emotional regulation.

What is possible with the Safe and Sound Protocol? With the Safe and Sound Protocol, you can experience a more flexible and resilient nervous system. This means you may find it easier to stay calm and focused when faced with challenges, and recover more quickly from stressful situations. Instead of reacting impulsively, you’ll be able to engage thoughtfully with the world around you, building deeper connections and approaching life with more balance. Ultimately, the SSP helps you manage emotions and stress more effectively, giving you a broader range of options for how to engage with the people and situations in your life.

  • Enhanced Nervous System Flexibility: Quickly adapt to stress, shifting between calm and alert states to optimize performance and recovery.

  • Faster Stress Recovery: Bounce back from mental or physical stress more efficiently, reducing downtime and boosting resilience.

  • Improved Emotional Regulation: Stay calm and focused in high-pressure situations, enhancing mental clarity and decision-making.

  • Increased Social Connection: Build deeper, more authentic relationships by improving your ability to engage with others.

  • Optimized Cognitive and Physical Performance: Boost mental clarity, cognitive function, and overall vitality by improving emotional and physiological balance.
